This includes closely <strong>monitoring carbon and water usage<\/strong> in our operations and implementing measures to <strong>reduce usage by 25%<\/strong> between 2022 and 2026. <\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2>Our Environmental and Climate Change Policy<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Our Environmental and Climate Change Policy outlines our commitment to responsible environmental practices and continuous improvement. This policy includes initiatives to limit\u00a0air\u00a0pollution, use more environmentally friendly packaging, invest in renewable energy, and reduce water and energy usage. <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Since the implementation of the policy in 2022, we have consistently achieved our environmental objectives. These methods enable us to make the necessary preparations for potential carbon tax requirements and also contribute to our efforts to operate as an environmentally responsible business.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p>While our operations are below the threshold for paying a carbon tax, all sites are registered for this tax with the South\u00a0African Revenue Services. We conducted a detailed annual assessment of the Group\u2019s carbon footprint for its\u00a0Manufacturing and Logistics divisions and Company-owned restaurants. Famous Brands does not have equity in nor\u00a0financial or operational control of franchised restaurants, and the franchise operations are not included in this assessment. This assessment focused on:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Scope 1:<\/strong> Identifying and quantifying direct GHG emissions that will require reporting to the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries and be liable for the carbon tax. Direct emissions include mobile fuel combustion (own fleet) and stationary fuel combustion (on-site equipment). <\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Scope 2 and 3:<\/strong> Understanding the primary sources of indirect GHG emissions contributing to the Group\u2019s overall carbon footprint. Indirect emissions include purchased electricity, water supply and waste disposal.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<p>The Group\u2019s total GHG emissions in 2024 by scope and division are detailed below. The increase in stationary fuel is attributed to the burning of diesel in our generators due to increased load shedding.  <\/li>\r\n\t\t\t<li>Purchased electricity usage decreased by 4%. <\/li>\r\n\t\t\t<li>Water supply emissions decreased\u00a0by 4%.<\/li>\r\n\t\t<\/ul>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p>The waste generated in our operations was 782 tonnes, a mix of\u00a0industrial and commercial waste, to landfill. Emissions related to waste decreased by 56% and were calculated at 425 metric tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub>e. We recycled 195 tonnes of waste material, including paper, plastics, metal, and glass. We composted 22 tonnes of organic waste material.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p>We have the following measures in\u00a0place to reduce our emissions: <\/p>\r\n\t\t<ul>\r\n\t\t\t<li>A Group-wide utilities savings awareness programme and an employee awareness campaign to\u00a0encourage environmentally responsible behaviour.<\/li>\r\n\t\t\t<li>Smart metering of electricity, water and key fuel usage tied to\u00a0key performance indicators.<\/li> \r\n\t\t\t<li>Fuel-type conversion to lower carbon fuels wherever possible and\u00a0an annual investment in solar\u00a0plants.<\/li> \r\n\t\t\t<li>Close monitoring and evaluation of\u00a0new generators as well as monitoring electricity usage by\u00a0refrigerators.<\/li>\r\n\t\t\t<li>Cultivating potatoes closer to the Lamberts Bay Foods processing plant, reducing travel emissions. <\/li>\r\n\t\t\t<li>Enhancing plant efficiencies to produce more units per hour of plant time.<\/li>\r\n\t\t\t<li>Fleet route optimisation to reduce the number of trips required. <\/li> \r\n\t\t<\/ul>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n\t<div class=\"clearfix\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"boxed\">\r\n\t<h4>Focus areas for 2025<\/h4>\r\n\t<p>Using water wisely and reducing our overall carbon footprint continue to be our key focus areas. While progress has been made, there is still more work to be done.
